Easy Ribbed Beanie

A beanie that doesn’t really require much thought, as the stitch is the same throughout. This method does use more yarn than a typical hat would. I usually use “I Love This Yarn” by Hobby Lobby and it takes almost half a skein.

Yarn- ANYTHING! I have used worsted weight and chunky, both in several different brands and textures.

Hook- Typically a good hook to use in a project like this is the suggested size on the label of your yarn. If you wish for a looser tension just go up in hook size. I do this sometimes when a yarn doesn’t feel as soft as I would like. This usually works well for me.

Chain until about 12 to 14 inches.

Half double crochet into third stitch from the hook and in each stitch across. Chain 1.

Half double crochet into the back loop only of each stitch across. Chain 1.

Repeat last row until your hat can fit around your head. For me that is usually 18 to 20 inches, depending on the yarn that I use. If this is for a child it will be obviously be less.

Sew the ends together.

The seem will disappear when you wear it.

Figure out which side you want to be the top and which is the bottom. It really doesn’t matter which is which.

When you find the top, thread your yarn with a darning needle all the way around. Pull tight, tie a knot and weave in the ends.

Now you can add a pom pom if you’d like or just leave it plain. You can fold up the bottom for the band. If you don’t want this look you will want to make sure that you don’t chain as much in the beginning.

I use the Pom Pom Maker by Clover which you can get from Michael’s here. You can also find them on Amazon but since I almost always have a coupon on hand for Michael’s, I usually go there for these type of things.

I do not claim this pattern because I’m sure someone else out there has done this way before me. It is just a super easy and mindless hat pattern that could be for women, men, children, whatever!

Thank you!
